The Day I Found Out It Was Identical Twins
There are days in life that split everything into before and after. Sometimes you can feel them coming, like the slow build toward a graduation or a wedding. Other times they arrive quietly, disguised as an ordinary Tuesday. The day I found out I was having twins started out routine and ended with my heart pounding, my mind spinning, and my future changing in ways I never could have imagined.
What makes this story even wilder is that I had a single embryo transfer. One baby…or so I thought.
Monozygotic twins resulting after a single embryo transfer are so rare that twins weren’t even on my radar. I’m not even sure I knew it was a possibility.
The First Ultrasound: Nothing Unusual… Yet
My mother came with me to my first ultrasound at precisely 6 weeks gestation, which is the initial confirmation scan to make sure the pregnancy was progressing as expected. The ultrasound tech started scanning, and we saw exactly what we expected.
I even joked with the tech as I did with my first pregnancy. “It’s not twins, right?” We all laughed. The tech reassured me it was one baby.
We left the office feeling relieved and happy. The pregnancy was continuing, the embryo had implanted in the correct place, and everything looked normal. I remember thinking how grateful I was that Lily was going to get a sibling.
I had no idea how short‑lived that reality would be.
One Week Later: Everything Changes
Exactly one week later, I went back for the second scan. My fertility clinic always planned two scans before releasing patients to the care of their OBs.
This time my dad came with me. He’s hard of hearing, so he sat watching his own monitor in front of him while I watched the one above me.
It was just the final routine confirmation.
But the moment the image appeared, I froze.
Unmistakably, even to my untrained eyes, there were two embryos sitting side-by-side.
My brain couldn’t process it fast enough. I stared at the screen, then at the tech, then back at the screen.
The tech was quiet for a while and then asked, “How many embryos did you transfer?”
“One,” I said. “But… I see two.” She said, “mm-hmm".”
My dad was still watching his monitor, and I wasn’t sure if he was hearing us or realizing what was happening. I asked him what he saw, and he said, “Twins!” He was giddy.
She mumbled something, but it became clear to me that she wasn’t allowed to officially confirm it yet. She said the doctor would need to review the scan. Meanwhile, she kept measuring, clicking, adjusting angles, doing whatever ultrasound techs do during those early scans. I could tell she knew they were twins and she did everything but say it outright.
The silence felt endless.
Inside my head, it was anything but silent. My thoughts were ricocheting like ping‑pong balls.
Oh my God.
Oh wow.
Oh no.
Oh my God.
I’m in big trouble.
This is amazing.
This is terrifying.
How is this happening?
The Confirmation That Wasn’t Quite a Confirmation
When the scan was over, the tech printed out the images. Somehow the printouts didn’t show the twins nearly as clearly as the screen had. On the monitor, they were unmistakable. On paper, they looked like abstract art. It was also one of the rare times I didn’t take pictures of the screen with my phone. I’m sure I forgot because my brain was still trying to catch up.
I left the office in a daze, clutching the ultrasound pictures.
Telling My Mother: The Punchline That Wasn’t a Punchline
When we got home, my mother was expecting a boring update. Another normal scan.
Instead, I walked in and said, “Identical twins.”
She stared at me. I think she was waiting for me to laugh. She definitely thought I was kidding around.
She just kept staring.
“There’s no punchline,” I finally said.
She blinked. “What?”
I had to pull out the printouts and physically point to the two embryos because the images were so unclear. Even then, she squinted and said, “Are you sure?”
It took me a while to convince her I wasn’t joking. My dad had to confirm. Very soon, though, we were all talking twin logistics like it had been the plan all along.
The Third Ultrasound: Officially, Unequivocally Twins
The following week, I had to go back for a third ultrasound so the doctor could officially confirm the twin pregnancy.
Everyone in the office congratulated me as I walked out. I thanked them, and smiled politely, but inside I was already starting to feel the weight of what was coming. This was a happy miracle but it would not be a cake walk.
A twin pregnancy.
A higher‑risk pregnancy.
More monitoring.
More uncertainty.
More baby gear.
More everything.
I knew this adventure was just beginning.
Because Apparently Twins Weren’t Enough: A Leap Day Due Date
And as if identical twins wasn’t unbelievable enough, their due date was Leap Day. I laughed out loud when I was told. And when I started telling people I was pregnant with identical twins due on February 29, their reactions were priceless too. One of the first people I told was my cousin, who is like a sister to me. Later that day, I told her husband and he thought I was kidding around. He laughed and laughed. He came back later and apologized. By this point, nothing fazed me.
Planning Ahead: The Gender Question
I didn’t find out Lily’s gender until 15 weeks. I was supposed to get the results at 12 weeks but finally found out that the lab tech at my OB’s office actually lost my blood sample and we had to do another blood draw. Those 3 weeks seemed like an eternity.
This time? Absolutely not.
With twins, I needed to know sooner. I needed to prepare, especially if they were boys, because I had nowhere near enough clothes, shoes, hats, or socks.
So at 7 weeks along, right after I saw twins on the monitor, I bought an over‑the‑counter gender reveal blood test on Amazon called Sneak Peek. I followed the instructions, packaged the sample, and sent it off.
My gender reveal results came back within a couple of days.
I was in my 8th week.
Identical twin boys.
Processing the Reality: Before and After
I spent those early weeks vacillating between excitement and panic, sometimes within the same breath.
I knew about the pregnancy risks.
I was concerned about delivery.
I considered the sheer number of diapers.
But I also thought about the magic of it.
Two babies sharing the same DNA.
Two boys growing side by side.
Two little lives that began as one.
Two brothers who would always have each other.
It felt like chaos and destiny all at once.
Looking Back Now
It’s amazing how quickly life can change. My entire future changed in one second.
I would not have slept that night except for the bone-crushing exhaustion gestating twins caused me.
I had no idea then just how much those two little boys would challenge me, teach me, and change me.
I didn’t know yet about tandem feeding, NICU worries, developmental delays, the oncoming chaos, laughter, fighting, the incredible bond between twins, or the way they would completely reshape our family.
All I knew that day was that my single embryo transfer had somehow become two babies.
And I was about to begin an adventure I never expected.
One that would be exhausting.
One that would be terrifying at times.
One that would be absolutely nothing like what I planned.
But also one that I wouldn’t trade for anything.
